ROSEMONT, Ill. - Elizabeth Chikotas (Hellertown, Pa.) has been named the Big Ten Women's Cross Country Freshman of the Year, as announced by the conference Wednesday. Most recently, Chikotas was the top freshman to complete the 6,000-meter course at the Big Ten Cross Country Championships.

Chikotas was a unanimous selection for the Big Ten Women's Cross Country Freshman of the Year award.

Chikotas, who went on to place 15th, was just two seconds back of posting a Second Team All-Big Ten finish. She went on to complete the 6,000-meter course in a time of 20 minutes, 29.7 seconds. Chikotas was in 14th-place at the 3,000-meter split (10:02.30).

"Elizabeth has been having a wonderful freshman campaign and this honor is well deserved," head coach/director of cross country and track & field John Gondak said. "The Big Ten Conference is one of the deepest conferences for women's cross country in 2014, which makes this honor even more prestigious. I am excited to see what Elizabeth can do the remainder of this season along with the rest of her time here at Penn State."

She was also the top finisher in four of five meets for the Nittany Lions this year, including an eighth-place finish at the Pre-National Invitational on Oct. 18.

Chikotas becomes the third Nittany Lion to win the Big Ten Women's Cross Country Freshman of the Year award (Colleen Glyde, 1992 and Nicole Lord, 2009).

Also, Wade Endress (Altoona, Pa.) and Katie Rodden (Ardmore, Pa.) both garnered Big Ten Sportsmanship awards.

The Nittany Lions do not compete this weekend as they prepare for the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional (Nov. 14). Penn State is hosting the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional at the Blue-White Golf Course in University Park, Pa. The women's 6k is set for noon and the men's 10k is slated for a 1 p.m. start.
