NEW ORLEANS - After a third-place finish at the Big Ten Cross Country Championships, the Penn State men's cross country team moved up to No. 24 in the National Coaches' Poll, as announced Tuesday by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). The Nittany Lion men have been receiving votes in every USTFCCCA National Coaches' Poll this year except for the preseason poll.
Over the weekend, the Nittany Lions topped No. 20 Indiana, then-No. 22 Michigan State and then-(RV) Minnesota en route to their third-place finish.
Fifth-year senior Matt Fischer (Kennett Square, Pa.) paced the Nittany Lion contingent as he completed the 8,000-meter course in 23 minutes, 52.8 seconds to finish eighth. Joining Fischer in the top-15 was Glen Burkhardt (Kennett Square, Pa.). Burkhardt finished 11th with his time of 23:55.8. Both Fischer and Burkhardt garnered Second Team All-Big Ten honors for their efforts.
At the regional level, the Nittany Lion men are ranked third, while the women are fifth.
The Nittany Lions do not compete this weekend as they prepare for the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional (Nov. 14). Penn State is hosting the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional at the Blue-White Golf Course in University Park, Pa. The women's 6k is set for noon and the men's 10k is slated for a 1 p.m. start.
