Nittany Lions place 14th among nations best cross country teams

Terre Haute, Ind. - Freshman Tracey Brauksieck (Homer, N.Y.) once again led the Nittany Lion scoring placing fifteenth out of 254 runners in a time of 20:47.1 at the 2002 NCAA Pre-Nationals Saturday at Indiana State University. Florida State¡¯s Vicky Gill won the race in a time of 19:54.8.

The Nittany Lions earned a fourteenth place finish scoring 421 points. The 37-team field consisted of 12 Top 25 FinishLynx NCAA Division I ranked schools. No. 2 Stanford won the Pre-National with 57 points while No. 26 Wake Forest was second with 165 points and No. 6 North Carolina State was third with 199 points. No. 13 Notre Dame and No. 21 Northern Arizona tied for fourth place both scoring 214 points.

Other scorers for the Nittany Lions included sophomore Molly Landreth (Newburyport, Mass.) placing 61st in a time of 21:40.1 and sophomore Chelsea Lenge (West Hartford, Conn.) with a time of 21:55.2 placing 83rd. Rounding out the scoring for the Nittany Lions was sophomore Michelle Wale (Pine Bush, N.Y.) in a time of 22:16.8 for 127th place and junior Katy Hillard (Turbotville, Pa.) in a time of 22:19.5 for 135th.

Junior Maureen Thomas (Bethlehem, Pa.) and junior/transfer Tara Johnson also placed 156th and 164th, respectively. Thomas finished in a time of 22:31.0 and Johnson in a time of 22:39.4.

Penn State will be back in action Nov. 3 at West Lafayette, Ind. for the Big Ten Championships which are set to start at 11:00 a.m.
