UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.- Penn State's men's cross country team finished in second place behind William & Mary at the National Invitational held on the Blue/White golf course. William & Mary won the meet with 21 points , while the Nittany Lions had 50.
Pacing Penn State for the first time was sophomore Scott Munro (South Park, Pa.), who grabbed 2nd place with a personal best time of 26:05.25. Seniors John McGrorey (West Chester, Pa.) and Gregg Davis (Newtown, Pa.) also placed in among the top 15 runners taking 5th and 12th, with times of 26:24.15 and 26:45.34. Other scorers for Penn State were Josh Loren (Jr., Waterford, Pa.) and Vic Flemming (Sr., Patrolia, Pa.), who crossed the line neck and neck in 21st and 22nd place, with times of 27:07.87 and 27:08.48. Rounding out the scoring was the duo of Ian Hahn (Sr., Lakehurst, N.J.), who finished in 28th with a time of 27:19.58 and Steve Walsh (Sr., Blue Bell, Pa.), who finished 29th with a time of 27:20.25.
The Nittany Lions battled with the Tribe of William & Mary for most of the race, but in the end William & Mary's superior depth led to them to victory. Penn State's coach Harry Groves said, " William & Mary is a great team and on a good day we could beat them, but today their depth was just too much. Our top three guys ran well, but we needed our other runners to step up. "
The Nittany Lions will return to action on Sunday, October 28, when they head to the University of Illinois for the Big Ten Championships. Penn State finished 3rd and last year and will be looking to duplicate that feat.
