Mazzocco leads Penn State men¡¯s cross country team to fifth place finish at Adidas Notre Dame Invitational

SOUTH BEND, IND., OCT. 3, 2003- The Penn State men¡¯s cross country took fifth place in South Bend, Ind. today.

Notre Dame, ranked No. 17, won the meet with a score of 76 total points. Coming in at second was No. 12 ranked and Big Ten opponent Michigan (92) and No. 29 ranked Eastern Michigan was third (128). Duke, who received votes to be in the Mondo Men¡¯s Cross Country Rankings, took fourth with a score of 163 points and Penn State was fifth (200).

Sophomore Dan Mazzocco (Pittsburgh, Pa.) continuing on his quest back from injury last season continues to be the Nittany Lions top runner. He placed 11th in a time of 24.52. Mazzocco has already been named Big Ten Cross Country Athlete of the Week once this season following his win at the Spiked Shoe Meet.

Gavin Thompson of No. 29 ranked Eastern Michigan won the race with a time of 24:06.

Junior Joel Moceri (Reading, Pa.) ran his way to a 32nd finish and senior Chris Pruitt (Flemington, NJ) took 48th (25:35). Junior Chris Foster (Severna Park, Md.) came in at 50th (25:36), Shawn Cavanaugh (Pittsburgh, Pa.) took 65th in a time of 25:47 and junior Scott Munro (South Park, Pa.) finished out the placing for Penn State coming in at 118th (26:21).

The other half of the Nittany Lion team will be competing in the Paul Short Run hosted by Lehigh University tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. Penn State is back at home on Oct. 18, 2003 for the Penn State National set to start at 11:00 a.m.
