Freshman Caitlin Lane Named Big Ten Co-Athlete of the Week
Sept. 3, 2008
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Thanks to a winning performance at the Dolan Duals at Lock Haven last weekend, freshman Caitlin Lane (Greenwich, N.Y.) has been named Big Ten Athlete of the Week. Lane is the first Nittany Lion freshman to win the cross country citation since Bridget Franek (Hiram, Ohio) captured the honor as a rookie in 2006. Lane shares this week's honor with Michigan's Danielle Tauro, who also posted an individual win over the weekend.
Lane made a break from teammates Kara Millhouse (Boiling Springs, Pa.) and Jessie Babcock (Irvine, Calif.) late in the race, and cruised to victory, running 14:44.11 for the 4,000-meter course. A standout high school athlete out of New York, Lane was a two-time Footlocker National qualifier as well as the New York State Class C Cross Country Champion in 2006 and 2007.
The Lions ran away with the team title at Lock Haven, posting a near-perfect 17 points to Lock Haven's 46 in the two-team competition.
Lane and the Nittany Lions will be in action again next weekend, as they are set to host the annual Harry Groves Spiked Shoe Invitational on Sept. 13.
