NEW ORLEANS – The United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced its list of 2014 cross country All-Academic Individuals and All-Academic Teams. Three Nittany Lions were named as All-Academic Individuals along with the women’s cross country team being named an All-Academic team.
Katie Rodden (Ardmore, Pa.) represented the Penn State women as an All-Academic Individual, while Robby Creese (Mount Airy, Md.) and Matt Fischer (Kennett Square, Pa.) were named All-Academic on the men’s side.
Fischer became the first Nittany Lion to win the men's race at the Mid-Atlantic Regional since Dan Mazzocco took home the title in 2003. With his first-place finish at the regional meet, Fischer was named the Mid-Atlantic Region Men's Athlete of the Year by the USTFCCCA. He also became the second Nittany Lion to garner the award (Mazzocco, 2003). Fischer was named second team All-Big Ten for his eighth-place finish at the Big Ten Cross Country Championships.
As a team, the Penn State women were named All-Academic as they posted an overall GPA of 3.39.
To qualify, honorees must have compiled a cumulative GPA of at least 3.25 and have finished in the top 15 finishers (or 10 percent) at regionals or as an All-American at the national meet. To earn All-Academic Team status, the team must have had a cumulative team GPA of 3.00 or better and have started at least five runners at their respective NCAA regional championship.
