In arguably in the best freshman campaign in program history, Franek tore through the distance ranks in 2006, including an individual bid to the NCAA Championships and top five finishes at the Lock Haven Invitational, Spiked Shoe Invitational, Penn State National, and NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional. The Big Ten Runner of the Week honoree, Franek took 17th at the conference championships and was just the second freshman to finish. Franek's success continued on the track, as the Hiram, Ohio, native qualified for NCAAs indoors and out, set a new Penn State record in the 3000-meter steeplechase (9:59.21) and was named Big Ten Freshman of the Year.
