UNIVERSITY PARK, PA. - As we move into the winter season and holidays, the competition between the thirty-one sports and their alumni is beginning to heat up the Penn State Alumni Challenge for Former Student-Athletes.
Through the first few months of the challenge, 752 former student-athletes have contributed to in support of their programs. New supporters have made a strong showing: Almost 35 percent of our former student-athletes who have joined the challenge to support our current student-athletes are new donors.
A few teams have moved into the top of the pack and are eyeing the first part of the $6,000 prize, which is for the highest percentage of former student-athletes who represent their team in supporting Penn State Athletics. Among them, the top 5 teams with the highest percentage of former student-athlete support so far are women's ice hockey (26.32%), men's ice hockey (14.64%), men's lacrosse (13.76%), men's golf (10.31%) and women's golf (8.33%).
One team has already exceeded last year's numbers and has taken a step forward in winning the second prize of $6,000 for the team with the highest percentage increase of former student-athlete donors over last year. The women's ice hockey program is 5 percent ahead of last year's numbers. It's not too late for the other teams to rally and catch the leaders! To see your team's results and to see which of your former teammates have supported the challenge thus far, visit the Alumni Challenge Page on our website to see the honor roll of support. To learn more about this challenge and to stay up-to-date on the progress, visit the Varsity `S' Club website and Varsity `S' Facebook page. The end of the tax year is a great time for former student-athletes to make a donation to their sport and support the challenge. All gifts through the Nittany Lion Club are tax deductible. One hundred percent of former student-athlete donations go to their program while donors receive all Nittany Lion Club benefits. Without donor support of our student-athletes, they wouldn't be able to compete and learn at the highest levels. Because of you, our supporters, our programs are what they are today. Penn State would like to thank our former student-athletes and all of our donors for your continued generosity to Penn State Intercollegiate Athletics.
