Past and Present Nittany Lions to Compete at Olympic Track and Field Trials




State College, Pa., July 13, 2000 - Seven current and former Penn State track and field athletes will join America's finest in the sport this weekend at the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials on July 14-23 in Sacramento, Calif. More than 1,200 athletes will compete in 39 separate events to determine the U.S. roster for the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia.

C.J. Hunter headlines the field of Penn State alumni competing at the trials. The five-time All-American will compete in the shot, an event which he captured the world championship in 1999 with a toss of 71'-6".

A pair of former Penn Staters will compete in the javelin, including two-time All-American and 1995 Big Ten champion Rob Austin. Dave Magsay, an All-America choice in 1987, will also compete in the javelin.

Current Nittany Lion junior DeShaya Williams, an All-American in 1999, will compete in the discus on the women's side.

Carrie Karabinos will attempt to qualify in the javelin, while Kim McGreevy will compete in the 1500 meters.

Internationally, two-time All-American George Audu recently qualified for England's National Team in the long jump.

Events begin Friday with the early rounds of the 100, 400 and 1,500 meters, the finals of the men's and women's 10,000 meters and qualifying rounds of the women's high jump, men's shot put, women's hammer throw and men's pole vault. The women's heptathlon also begins Friday.
