Assistant Track Coach to be Inducted into Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.-- Penn State assistant track coach and former Lion captain Dayna Holston will be inducted into the Washington-Greene County chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame in June. She is only the second woman ever selected. For the honor, she joins former Penn State All-American Elaine Sobansky, who was Holston's high school coach. "At this point, I am shocked and very honored to be among these people who have already done so much in their respected sports," Holston said. In her fourth season on the Penn State staff, Holston oversees the throwing events and the pole vault, and she has been instrumental in producing excellence performances. Under her guise, school records in the javelin, discus, 20 lb. weight and pole vault have been established, as well as numerous top Big Ten finishes, All-American honors and NCAA championship appearances. As a Penn State track and field athlete, Holston twice qualified for the NCAA's, finishing 10th and 11th, missing All-America honors by one spot both times. She holds the sixth all-time best javelin throw (164'1) at Penn State, a mark for which she took third at the Big Ten Championships. A standout in the classroom as well, Holston received the Penn State Academic Achievement Award and Academic All-Big Ten honors, making Dean's List five semesters. She was also inducted into the Athletic Honor Society, Spiritus Leionus. A 1990 graduate of Trinity High School in Washington, Pa., Holston was a W.P.I.A.L. champion in the javelin with a throw of 155'6, a mark which was ranked No. 2 in the USA Today. In her junior season, she participated in the Junior Elite Throwing Camp in Colorado and earned High School All-America honors. She placed third and fifth in the javelin and discus, respectively, at the P.I.A.A. Championships. A versatile athlete, she was captain of the track and volleyball teams, garnering Section 7 Volleyball MVP honors her senior season, and won two bowling state championships, posting a game high 285. The 15th class of 14 to be inducted include former Penn State standouts, George Reihner, an All-American and NFL veteran, and two-time NCAA wrestling champion and All-American Cary Kolat. Last year's honorees included long-time Penn State defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky, and Wisconsin Head Football Coach Barry Alvarez. The ceremony will be conducted on Fri., June 16 at the Meadowlands in Washington, Pa.
