UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Thanks the generosity of the Kevin Dare Foundation, the Penn State men's and women's track & field squads now have a special area for the teams inside Horace Ashenfelter III Indoor Track. The Kevin Dare Memorial Team Lounge opened this spring on the upper floor of the facility and features an area for team meetings as well as technology for student-athletes to use and a coaches' office at the track.

"The gracious gift from the Kevin Dare Foundation has added another outstanding element for our track & field program to use on a daily basis," said Director and Head Coach of Track & Field and Cross Country Beth Alford-Sullivan. "The team lounge gives our student-athletes a place to enjoy some free time, study and prepare for upcoming practices. We are so proud to represent Kevin's legacy with this team lounge and appreciate all the support from the Kevin Dare Foundation."

In addition to the gift for the lounge, the Kevin Dare Foundation previously also endowed a scholarship for a track & field student-athlete.

The Kevin Dare Foundation was established after the death of Penn State sophomore Kevin Dare at the 2002 Big Ten Men's Indoor Track & Field Championships. Dare, an accomplished and experienced pole vaulter, died after hitting his head on the metal planting box where he had planted his pole for the jump. After years of trying to further improve the safety mandates of the sport, prompting development and urging use of the world's first approved pole vault -specific helmet, the world's first SoftBox and trying to create awareness of the dangers and stricter safety standards needed for the sport, the Foundation realized that the true legacy of Kevin Dare could be found within how he lived his life, not just from the cause of the end of it. In conjunction with the 10 year anniversary of Kevin's passing, the Foundation focused its mission and fundraising efforts to help high school student-athletes with debilitating injuries/illness, through financial scholarships, achieve their academic goals - the true legacy of Kevin Dare - a legacy of integrity, inspiration, and indomitable spirit - to help others to get life...back on track.
