Penn College Wins 2007 PSUAC Softball Championship in an Impressive Comeback

Top seeded Beaver went into the second day unbeaten, but a persistent Penn College team won three games in a row to take the 2007 PSUAC crown at Nittany Lion Softball field at University Park, May 4-5.

Game 7
Penn College over Beaver 6-3

Penn College did the unexpected in defeating a strong Beaver team to claim the title. Lisa Miller, Michelle McNett and Melissa Bearer each had two hits for Penn College and Kristen Bernard did an outstanding job on the mound to seal the victory. Beaver was lead by Abby Mihalli at the plate with a two for three performance. Penn College, coached by Roger Harris, showed strong defense in going errorless while Beaver ended the game with six errors.

Friday, May 4th

Game 1
Penn College over Mont Alto 4-3

Pitcher Renee Craig led Penn College on the mound and at the plate as she pitched all 8 innings and was three for three in a very well played game. Kristen Bernard and Lauren Fuller also had two hits for Penn College. Britney Atherton and Mandi McCleaf each had two hits for Mont Alto in the first game of the championship.

Game 2
Beaver over Hazleton 6-5

In another close game, Beaver was led by the two hit performances of Jen Hain, Becky Garcia and Alona Verrico. Becky Garcia scored three runs for a strong Beaver squad coached by Athletic Director Andy Kirschner. Chrissy Shultz was two for three for Hazleton.

Game 3
Hazleton over Mont Alto 7-2

Jamie San Fillipo was two for four and Lindsey Ludorf had two RBI's for Hazleton as they eliminated Mont Alto in the four team double elimination tournament. Britney Atherton was three for four in a losing effort for Mont Alto.

Game 4
Beaver over Penn College 7-6

Beaver showed why they were top seeded in defeating Penn College 7-6 behind two hit performances from Jen Hain and Chelsea Brownlee. Penn College was led by Lauren Fuller, Lisa Miller and Melissa Bearer in what would turn out to be a preview of the championship.

Saturday, May 5th

Game 5
Penn College over Hazleton 2-1

Penn College continued their run with a solid defensive performance as they played errorless ball behind the strong pitching of Renee Craig. This game eliminated Hazleton and set up the rematch with Beaver for the championship.

Game 6
Penn College over Beaver 13-5

Penn College showed great determination in reversing the outcome in the rematch with Beaver behind strong performances by Lisa Miller (2for2, 3 runs) Samantha Mills (4for4, 2 runs) Theresa Witherson (2for3, 1 run) and Lauren Fuller (3 runs)..Jamie Clouse was three for three and Ashley Piroli was two for three for Beaver but the team total of six errors proved to be too much to overcome. The strong team play in a clutch situation for Penn College set up the final game in a championship played on a beautiful spring weekend.
