UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Former Penn State fencing All-American Teodora Kakhiani (Tbilisi, Georgia) has won the 2017 European Sabre Championship in Tbilisi, Georgia. The former Nittany Lion great entered the tournament as an underdog and stormed through the field to claim the title.
Kakhiani, the NCAA Sabre National Runner-Up last year and a recent Penn State graduate, won her title in front of her hometown crowd in Tbilisi. She entered the tournament ranked 202nd by the International Fencing Federation (FIE). Kakhiani downed Italy’s Rossella Gregoria by a 15-8 score in the finals. Gregoria is a winner of multiple medals in both World and European Championships events and a member of the Italian National Team. Rossella was ranked No. 13 by the FIE.
