March 22, 2010- Dan Vallimont (wrestling) and Amy Modglin (women's swimming)
Freshman women's swimmer Amy Modglin captured honorable mention All-America status in the 200 backstroke at the NCAA Championships. She reached the NCAA CHampionship consolation finals where she placed 16th with a time of 1:56.19. In addition to her All-America honors, Modglin also finished 29th in the 400 IM preliminaries with a 4:15.03 finish and 55th in the 200 IM with a 2:01.78. March 19, 2010- Joe Kovacs (track & field) and Bridget Franek (track & field)
Bridget Franek who was appearing in her 11th-consecutive NCAA event, captured her eighth, and ninth All-America finishes at the NCAA Indoor Championships this past weekend. The senior grabbed fourth-place honors in the 5,000-meters, before coming back to finish seventh in the 3,000-meters just 24 hours later. The senior helped her Nittany Lion teammates to 13th place finish in the team standings. March 9, 2010- Cyler Sanderson (wrestling) and Tyra Grant (women's basketball)
Tyra Grant established herself as one of the best players in Lady Lion history by becoming the fourth player in program history to reach the 2,000-point plateau last week. The senior guard guided the Lady Lions to a first round win over Minnesota in the Big Ten Tournament with 15 points, four rebounds, two blocks and two steals. In the quarterfinal round against Iowa, Grant tallied 32 points on 11-for-23 shooting to go along with nine rebounds, a block and a pair of steals. Her 32 points are tied for sixth on the Big Ten Tournament single game scoring chart. With her effort against the Hawkeyes, Grant moved past Tanisha Wright for fourth place on Penn State's career scoring list and surpassed the 2,000-point mark. In two tournament games, Grant averaged 23.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, 1.5 blocks and 2.0 steals. March 2, 2010- Ben Heath (baseball) and Shavon Greaves (women's track & field)
The women's track and field team was trailing in the team standings for much of the afternoon when the Lions screamed into first place with two events remaining, thanks to a 25-point haul in the 200-meters led by a victory from sophomore Shavon Greaves. Claiming her second-career Big Ten Indoor title in the event, Greaves blitzed to a facility- and meet-record, and NCAA-automatic qualifying 22.98. Greaves' blazing one-lap effort is also the fastest in the NCAA this year. Greaves' 200 title was her second of the afternoon, after she ran away with the 60-meter crown in 7.30. The gold-medal effort was also her second-straight conference victory in the short dash. The junior would come back to cap the championship, running a leg on the winning 4x400-meter relay, which clocked a season-best and NCAA-provisional qualifying 3:35.38 - a new Big Ten Championship record. The relay win is the fifth-consecutive indoor conference title for the Nittany Lions, who have won eight of the last nine 4x400s in indoor and outdoor track. February 23, 2010- Max Lipsitz (men's volleyball) and Jackie Hill (softball)
Jackie Hill Senior Jackie Hill went 3-0 in three games started at the Campbell/Cartier Classic. She finished two games while posting a 1.11 ERA in 19 innings thrown. She allowed just three earned runs all weekend with 13 hits against, holding batters to .188, and walking 10 batters and striking out 21. Hill lowered her ERA to 2.65 and improved her record to 5-1. The highlight of the weekend was a 3-hit, 10-strikeout performance in five innings against Utah State, backing it up just a few hours later with a 5-hit showing against San Diego State, winning both games 6-1 and 3-1, respectively. Her performance against USU was even more striking considering the Aggies had just knocked off No. 1 Washington only hours earlier. Hill also started against Washington on Sunday, throwing three scoreless innings with only two hits against before the game was called due to rain. February 18, 2010- Talor Battle (men's basketball) and Brandi Personett (women's gymnastics)
This week's Big Ten Gymnast of the Week, senior Brandi Personett scored the second 10.0 of the season and her career on vault, while helping the Nittany Lion gymnasts to a 196.450-194.650 win at Pittsburgh. She finished first in the all-around for the fourth time this season with a career-high tying 39.600. Personett also took home individual event titles on beam with a 9.875 and floor with a 9.900. Personett has won floor in all six meets this season. She tied with teammate Sharaya Musser on bars for second with a 9.825. February 2, 2010- Ryan Foster (men's track & field) and Lyndsey Smith (women's swimming & diving)
Lyndsey Smith had a career weekend by not only winning all four of her individual races, but garnering season-best and "NCAA B" times in all four as well. For perspective, she entered the meet with no 'B' times on the season ... Her effort led the Nittany Lions past #28 Ohio State, 176-158, preventing the Buckeyes from their first undefeated dual season in program history (Penn State was their last opponent) ... In addition, three of Smith's four times were among the top 10 marks in Penn State program history ... Started on Friday by winning the 200 freestyle with a 'B' time of 1:48.40. Incredibly, it marked her first freestyle race (of any distance, individual or relay) on the season. That mark was also good for eighth-best in program history ... The same day, finished the 200 breaststroke at a 2:15.86 clip for second 'B' time of the weekend (and season) ... Was part of the 400 medley relay team that finished in third (3:48.79) ... Then on Saturday, won the 100 breaststroke ! (1:02.92) and 200 IM (2:01.48) while garnering 'B' times in both events. Both marks were also among Penn State's top 10 times in program history, but are not officially on the list due to Smith swimming to even better marks in both events last season ... Also part of the 200 medley relay team that placed second (1:43.96) ... Nittany Lions finished with seven 'B' times on the weekend, five individual (and four of which came from Smith). January 28, 2010- Brad Pataky (wrestling) and Brandi Personett (women's gymnastics)
Senior Brandi Personett was this week's Big Ten Gymnast of the Week, she won the all-around with a season-best score of 39.575 and scored the first 10.0 since 2003 on vault. She also earned fifth on bars with a 9.800, won beam with a 9.875 and won floor with a 9.900. Personett earned the Ann Carr award as the Most Inspirational Gymnast for Penn State at the meet. January 20, 2010- Ryan Foster (men's track) and Amy Modglin (women's swimming & diving)
Freshman Amy Modglin continued outstanding freshman season with three first-place finishes to lead squad to sweep over Pittsburgh, Maryland and Villanova ... Was the first Penn State swimmer (or relay team) to finish in all five races ... Highlight came in the 200 backstroke, setting a Trees Pool record by well over a second, A MARK THAT HAD STOOD SINCE 1979. She finished with an "NCAA B" time of 1:57.49, a full 1.44 seconds better than the previous mark (1:58.83) held by Stanfordâ?Ts Linda Jezek ... It marked Modglin's second pool record of the season (she captured her first at Virginia Tech earlier this season) ... Also had a "B" time, finishing first in the 400 IM (4:18.14) ... Placed first in the 200 IM (2:04.44), second in the 400 medley relay (3:50.09) and third in the 100 backstroke (56.84). January 12, 2010- Felix Aronovich (men's gymnastics) and Shavon Greaves (women's track & field)
After only two weeks as an enrolled student and a member of the Penn State men's gymnastics team and just three weeks removed from completing a compulsory stint in the Israeli Army, freshman Felix Aronovichshined in his collegiate debut, leading Penn State to a 341.000-314.350, season-opening victory over Army. Aronovich captured titles in two events, winning the pommel horse and parallel bars. He also tied for fourth place in the still rings. For his performance, he was recognized with the Gene Wettstone Award, an honor presented at each home event to the meet's most outstanding competitor. Junior Shavon Greaves made a statement on the NCAA sprint scene at the Penn State Relays last Saturday, posting NCAA-leading marks in the 60- and 200-meters. Greaves was on fire all afternoon, coming out with an NCAA-provisional qualifying 7.33 in the 60-meter preliminaries, and following up with an impressive 7.30 in the event final - good for her first victory of the 2010 season. The junior wasn't finished, however, sprinting to a speedy personal-best 23.22 in the 200, which was also good for first place and another NCAA-qualifying effort. Greaves is also swiftly solidifying her spot in Penn State history, as her performances in both events on Saturday are ranked second-to-only 11-time All-American Connie Moore in the Penn State record books. Greaves was joined by teammates Doris Anyanwu, Caitlin DeFusco, and Fawn Dorr on the winning 4x400-meter relay, which finished in 3:41.70 - just off the NCAA-qualifying mark of 3:40.00. January 5, 2010- Frank Molinaro (wrestling) and Tyra Grant (women's basketball)
Lady Lion senior All-American Tyra Grant led four Lady Lions in double figures with 20 points against Northwestern in the Lady Lions' 88-68 road victory. It was the 33rd 20-point game of her career and made her the seventh player in school history with 1,700 points. December 2, 2009- David Jackson (men's basketball) and Bridget Franek (women's cross country)
Bridget Franek scored her second-consecutive All-America finish at the NCAA Cross Country Championships, placing 26th overall in Terre Haute, Ind. Including her track and field honors, Franek is now a seven-time NCAA All-American and is a perfect 10-for-10 (through 2009 XC) in NCAA qualifying. Franek led her squad to a 14th-place finish in the team standings, the highest finish by a Nittany Lion team since 1996. November 24, 2009- Brad Pataky (wrestling) and Doris Willete (women's fencing)
Doris Willete a 2X national champion, cruised through the semi-finals and finals to finish in first place at the 2009 Garret Open here at Penn State. In the final round, Willette defeated Notre Dame's Hayley Reese in a rematch of last year's National Championship bout. The title was Willette's second straight at the event as she dominated against Reese 15-6. November 17, 2009- Corey Hertzog (men's soccer) and Tyra Grant (women's basketball)
Tyra Grant posted her first career double-double with 25 points and a career-best 11 rebounds at defending CAA Champion Drexel to open the season...Moved into 11th place on Penn State's all-time scoring list (1,483), passing Katina Mack and Jess Strom after the season-opener...Registered her 27th career 20-point game against the Dragons...Has 14 consecutive double-digit scoring games. November 10, 2009- David Willette (men's fencing) and Katie Schoepfer (women's soccer)
Katie Schoepfer notched her league-leading fourth game-winning goal of the year when she scored her 11th tally of the season against Michigan to clinch an outright win of the Big Ten title, the 12th-straight Big Ten Championship for Penn State. Schoepfer is now tied for the league-lead for points with fellow teammate Danielle Toney at 30. Schoepfer has notched 25 of her 30 points in Big Ten play this year. November 3, 2009- Kevin Foley (men's golf) and Bridget Franek (women's cross country)
Propelled by an individual victory from senior Bridget Franek the No. 18 Nittany Lion women's cross country team captured the program's first-ever Big Ten Cross Country Championship, Sunday at the Blue/White Golf Course. In a two-woman battle with NCAA 5,000-meter champion Angela Bizzari of Illinois for much of the race, Franek took full advantage of the challenging hills on the latter half of her home course, pulling away from her Illini foe and speeding down the home stretch to win her first career conference cross country title. Franek's winning time of 20:03 over the 6,000-meter race is the second-fastest time ever run on the Blue/White Golf Course. October 27, 2009- Daryll Clark (football) and Katie Schoepfer (women's soccer)
This week's Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week for the second consecutive week, Katie Schoepfer recorded just the 13th hat trick in Penn State history, and the first since 2005 by Tiffany Weimer, in a 6-0 win over Illinois on Sunday. The senior forward notched seven points on the day as she also added an assist, having her be a part of the first four goals. Schoepfer's hat trick was the first of her collegiate career and her seven points were a career high. They bumped her into the team lead in the category with 26, while also moving into first with 10 goals, and tied for first with six assists this season. Additionally, the game was her seventh-straight game in which she's scored, the third-best streak in PSU history, tied with Christie Welsh. October 20, 2009- Evan Royster (football) and Katie Schoepfer (women's soccer)
This Week's Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week, Katie Schoepfer's performance this weekend propelled Penn State into first place in the Big Ten for the first time this year. The Nittany Lions earned a hard-fought and thrilled 1-0 win at Minnesota, snapping the Golden Gophers' 19-game unbeaten streak there, when Schoepfer scored the game-winner with just six seconds on the clock. The goal was Schoepfer's second game-winning goal of the season and gave the Nittany Lions their first true road win of 2009. Moreover, in breaking Minnesota's eight-game unbeaten streak, Penn State moved into first place for the first time since ending the 2008 season atop the standings. Schoepfer would add a goal in a 3-3 tie at Wisconsin, upping Penn State's unbeaten streak to five-in-a-row in Big Ten play. Schoepfer is just the seventh PSU athlete to have 100+ points in school history, she now sits at 104. Since Big Ten play started, Schoepfer has led the team in scoring and has scored in six straight games dating back to the Sept. 27 Michigan State game. October 13, 2009- Jarod Odrick (football) and Danielle Toney (women's soccer)
This week's Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week, Danielle Toney notched an impressive six points this weekend, as Penn State swept Northwestern (2-0) and Iowa (4-0). In extending the Nittany Lions 13-game winning streak over the Wildcatsa, Toney scored the fastest goal of 2009 for PSU, recording her tally just 2:17 into the game. She would later to assist the insurance goal scored eight minutes later to secure the 2-0 win. Two days later, Toney was back at it again as the catalyst of the Nittany Lion offense. She was involved in all four goals scored in one form or another. Toney drew an Iowa defender on a cross, which went off the Iowa defender for an own goal for a 1-0 lead. ! A few minutes later, Toney's darting run and subsequent pass to Christine Nairn earned Dani her first assist of the game for the 2-0 lead. Not satisfied with her action in the first half, Toney went one-on-one with the goalie, was taken down in the box earning a penalty kick PSU would convert. And for good measure, Toney tallied her seventh goal of the season on a breakaway opportunity capping her second straight three-point day. The Nittany Lions are now 18-2-1 when Toney records a goal all-time during her three years in Happy Valley. October 13, 2009- Warren Gross (men's soccer) and Ali Meves (field hockey)
This week's Big Ten Player of the Week, junior Ali Meves was sensational in making 11 saves for her second-career victory and first over a ranked opponent. It was also her second double-figure save total of the season (and her career), all coming in the last three games (also at No. 7 Princeton on Sept. 23). Nine of her 11 saves came after halftime (six in the second half and three in overtime). She kept the score tied at one with a flurry of tremendous stops including when Ohio State had three straight penalty corners in the second half. Also stood on her head with three straight saves four minutes into overtime, which set up a transition which led to Kelsey Amy's game-winning goal. Improved her GAA to 2.13 and save percentage to .769. September 29, 2009- Corey Hertzog (men's soccer) and Alyssa D'Errico (women's volleyball)
Junior libero Alyssa D'Errico led the Nittany Lions with 25 digs in two Big Ten matches, averaging a team-best 4.17 digs per set. She was also tied for second on the team with two aces. Against Northwestern, D'Errico led the team with 14 digs and two aces. Her effective passing helped guide the Nittany Lions to a .442 attack percentage. Against Illinois, D'Errico was one of four players with double-digit digs. D'Errico tied for first on the team with 11 as the Nittany Lions registered a .477 attack percentage. She had only one reception error in 49 attempts. This week's results: beat Northwestern 3-0; beat No. 15 Illinois 3-0. September 22, 2009 - Sean Lee (football) and and Megan Hodge (women's volleyball)
This week's AVCA National Player of the Week and Big Ten Player of the Week, Megan Hodge started all three matches and all nine sets this week, finishing the weekend with a team-best 50 kills, averaging 5.56 kill per set. She recorded a .543 attack percentage through three matches. Hodge finished third on the team with 17 digs. Against Temple on 9/18, she was tied for first on the team with 11 kills. She went on to record a team-best 15 kills on .560 hitting against Saint Francis and a season-high 24 kills on .538 hitting against Temple (9/19). Hodge had only six errors on 81 swings. September 15, 2009 - Sean Lee (football) and Cheryl Spring (cross country)
This week's Big Ten Runner of the Week, senior Cheryl Spring topped the field at the Harry Groves Spiked Shoe Invitational for the second-straight year last Friday, leading her Nittany Lion squad to its second victory in as many weeks. Spring ran away from all competitors, including Big Ten foes from Ohio State and Illinois, finishing the 6,000-meter course in 21:13 - 11 seconds faster than the second-place finisher. Despite the wet and muddy conditions, Spring shaved 16 seconds off her winning time from the same competition in 2008. Spring's low stick led the Nittany Lions to victory in the team standings, as the Penn State squad totaled 33 points to better Big Ten rivals Ohio State (47 points), and Illinois (54 points). September 8, 2009- Daryll Clark (football) and Hannah Allison (field hockey)
Hannah Allison had superb week, sparking the offense with a career-high five-point performance Friday (9/4) vs. Lock Haven. In fact, those were the first points of her career. She had a hand in all three Penn State goals, including the first two to erase a 1-0 Nittany Lion deficit and give the team a 2-1 lead. She then made a nice pass to set up an insurance tally. Was a clutch performance as it gave Penn State its first win of the season. The five points were the most by a Nittany Lion since former All-American Allison Scola had five at Northwestern. The two goals by a freshman were the most since Oct. 18, 2005 when Scola had two against Bucknell. Leads the team with 15 shots on the season. The eight shots (and six shots on goal) from Friday also stand as the most by any Penn State player this season. September 1, 2009- Alisha Glass (women's volleyball)
