UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - A school record 81 Penn State student-athletes, representing seven fall sports, have earned Academic All-Big Ten honors. The Nittany Lions' 81 fall recipients are the most among conference institutions for the eighth time in the last 10 years.

Penn State's previous high for academic all-conference selections in the fall season was 78 in 2006. The Nittany Lions have 2,879 overall honorees during the past 13 ½ years to lead all Big Ten institutions in academic all-conference recipients.

Four Nittany Lions earned ESPN the Magazine Academic All-American honors this fall in addition to their conference accolades. Junior tackle Gerald Cadogan (Portsmouth, Ohio) was named to the first team and junior women's volleyball middle hitter Christa Harmotto (Aliquippa, Pa.) was named to the third team. Two members of the women's soccer team also were honored: senior Aubrey Aden-Buie (Allentown, Pa.) was named to the second team after earning third team accolades in 2006. Junior Zoe Bouchelle (Cockeysville, Md.) was named to the third team.

The academic all-conference award winners also achieved excellence outside of the classroom. Men's cross country member Tyler McCandless (Northampton, Pa.) finished 41st at the Big Ten Championships while sophomore women's cross country runner Bridget Franek (Hiram, Ohio) finished 57th at the NCAA Championships. Field hockey junior Jen Long (Doylestown, Pa.) was a finalist for the Honda Award. Men's Soccer junior Jason Yeisley (Allentown, Pa.) was also named First Team All-Big Ten and women's soccer sophomore Alyssa Naeher (Seymour, Conn.) picked up Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year honors.

Volleyball standout Harmotto earned Big Ten Player of the Year accolades and was named to the NCAA Championship All-Tournament team after playing an instrumental role in Penn State defeating Stanford, 3-2, to capture the NCAA Championship last Saturday.

The Big Ten recognized 661 fall student-athletes. To be eligible for Academic All-Big Ten selection, student-athletes must be letterwinners in at least their second academic year at their institution and carry a career grade-point average (GPA) of 3.0 or better.
