Freshman Men's Soccer Forward Hertzog, Senior Field Hockey Goalkeeper Beaumont This Week's Penn State Student-Athletes of the Week
Oct. 14, 2008 UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Freshman forward Corey Hertzog (Reading, Pa.) from the men's soccer squad and senior goalkeeper Jen Beaumont (Chalfont, Pa.) of the women's field hockey team have been named this week's Penn State Student-Athletes of the Week. Hertzog used the first two collegiate goals of his career to lift the Nittany Lions to an upset-win over No. 17 Ohio State, while Beaumont held off nationally-ranked offenses to grab field hockey two more victories. Both were also named Big Ten Players of the Week.
Hertzog first two career goals boosted Penn State to a 3-2 come-from-behind upset of 2007 College Cup finalists and No. 17-ranked Ohio State. The Reading, Pa. native tied the game at 2-2 in the 38th minute when he flicked in a header from 10 yards out. Hertzog notched the would-be game winner just two minutes later when he found space near the top of the box and fired a one-timer that slipped through the arms of the OSU goalkeeper. He nearly tallied a hat trick but his looping shot on an open goal with 13 minutes remaining in the game glanced off the post. Hertzog is tied for the team lead in assists (2) and points (6). He earned Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week honors for his standout performance versus the Buckeyes. Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week Beaumont and her No. 13-ranked Nittany Lion field hockey team held off two of the nation's premier offenses in three days, earning victories over No. 6 Iowa and No. 10 Virginia. Beaumont, who currently leads the Big Ten in goals against average (1.06) and save percentage (.824), allowed just one goal against the Hawkeyes - the fourth-best scoring offense in Division I. She made seven saves, including several game-preserving stops, in the win against the Cavaliers, who rank seventh in goals per game. 2008-09 Penn State Student-Athletes of the Week
