Williams, Zug Named Penn State Student-Athletes of the Week
Oct. 9, 2008 UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Football's Derrick Williams (Greenbelt, Md.) and field hockey's Daneen Zug (Manheim, Pa.) have been named this week's Penn State Student- Athletes of the Week. Williams earned Big Ten Special Teams Player of the Week recognition after accumulating a career-high 241 all-purpose yards and scoring three touchdowns against Illinois. Zug netted two goals off penalty corners against Princeton. Derrick Williams was one of the primary catalysts in Penn State's 38-24 victory over No. 22 Illinois on Saturday. Senior wide receiver Derrick Williams became the first player since Joe Paterno became head coach in 1966 to score a rushing touchdown, a receiving touchdown and a kick return touchdown in the same game. His 241 all-purpose yards (33 rushing, 75 receiving and 133 on kick returns) yards were the most by a Nittany Lion since Larry Johnson in 2002.
The captain also delivered the play of the game in the first play of the fourth quarter with a 94- yard kickoff return untouched by any Illinois hands. The kickoff return touchdown was his second of the season; his first was against Coastal Carolina in the season opener, becoming just the third Nittany Lion to do so all-time. Sophomore back-midfielder, Daneen Zug, netted two goals in a 3-2 loss to Princeton Wednesday. Both of her goals were off penalty corners in which she wailed the ball into the back of the net from 13- and 15-yards out. In Sunday's 1-0 win over No. 15 Ohio State, Allison Scola initiated a corner pass to Zug who took a hard shot blocked by Ohio State, the ball trickled off the Buckeye allowing Penn State's Jessica Longstreth to complete the goal. 2008-09 Penn State Student-Athletes of the Week
