UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Three NCAA Championship teams from this year will be recognized at halftime of Tuesday's NCAA Women's Basketball Championship game between Penn State and Florida in the Bryce Jordan Center.
Members of the Penn State women's volleyball, wrestling and fencing teams will appear during intermission of the NCAA second round game, which begins at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the BJC. The winner advances to the Stanford Regional semifinals.
Penn State has won 15 NCAA Championships by five different teams since March 2007, tied with USC for most in the nation over that span. The Nittany Lions have won 73 national championships all-time.
Head coach Russ Rose's women's volleyball team won its sixth NCAA Championship on Dec. 22 in Seattle. Led by NCAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player Micha Hancock, Penn State downed Wisconsin in four sets to claim the title. The Nittany Lions capped off a superb 34-2 season with the victory, winning their fifth NCAA Championship in the past seven years.
The Penn State wrestling team, under the direction of head coach Cael Sanderson, won its fourth consecutive national title last Saturday in Oklahoma City. Seniors David Taylor and Ed Ruth capped off historic collegiate careers with individual titles to lead the Nittany Lions. Penn State became just the third team in NCAA history to win four NCAA wrestling championships in a row. It also was the fifth NCAA wrestling title in school history.
The Penn State men's and women's fencing teams, under the direction of interim head coach Wes Glon, won their 13th NCAA Championship on Sunday in Columbus, Ohio. Led by Kaito Streets' individual championship in the men's saber, the Nittany Lions became the winningest program in NCAA fencing history with the championship. Penn State has won four NCAA Championships in the past eight seasons.
The Lady Lion basketball team (23-7), which has won three consecutive Big Ten Championships, is the No. 3 seed in the Stanford Regional and defeated Wichita State on Sunday. Florida is the No. 11 seed and improved to 20-12 with a victory over Dayton on Sunday. The Penn State-Florida series is tied, 1-1, and the teams will be meeting for the first time since December 2000.
