UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - On the heels of the Nittany Lion women's outdoor track and field team clinching its fourth Big Ten title in the last six seasons, Penn State sports teams have now won a school record eight Big Ten championships, including a record seven regular season crowns, during a tremendous 2012-13 athletic season.

8925892.jpegThe superb list of Big Ten accomplishments includes fall titles from field hockey (regular season and tournament), men's soccer (co-champions), women's soccer and women's volleyball.  The women's basketball and wrestling teams each captured conference titles during the winter.  The women's outdoor track and field team capped off the season of conference titles with a victory on Sunday.  Penn State won seven of the 24 Big Ten championships it competed in this year.

During the last two years, Penn State has won 13 Big Ten titles, more than any other two-year span since the athletic department joined the conference.  The previous high was 11 titles in 2008-09 and 2009-10.

Since joining the Big Ten in 1992, Penn State has won a total of 81 conference titles, which includes 67 regular season Big Ten crowns.

As for individual seasons, Penn State won six titles during three seasons in the Big Ten - 1998-99 (4 regular season, 2 postseason), 2005-06 (6 regular season) and 2008-09 (5 regular season and 1 postseason.  But the 2012-13 campaign has elevated the department's Big Ten success to new heights with seven regular season titles and one postseason crown.

In addition to the record-breaking total number of Big Ten championships won this season, Penn State's women's outdoor track and field crown eclipsed the previous record number of regular season titles in a single season with seven.  The previous mark came during 2005-06 when Penn State tallied six regular season Big Ten titles.

Relative to the other schools in the Big Ten, Penn State has won more titles (eight) this year than anyone else.  Michigan is second on the list with five.  During the last two years, Penn State has won 13 conference titles.  Michigan is second on the list with nine, and Wisconsin is third with seven.

As of today, 19 different Penn State teams have competed in NCAA postseason competition during the 2012-13 calendar, as well.  That list will likely grow with the upcoming NCAA Track and Field Championships.  The Nittany Lion wrestling team captured its third-straight NCAA title in March.  The women's soccer team advanced to the College Cup Final for the first time in program history.  The men's and women's volleyball teams each competed in the NCAA semifinals.

Off the field, Penn State student-athletes continue to excel in the classroom.  A record 109 student-athletes from across the department graduated earlier in May.

Penn State's athletic programs live by the "One Team" mantra.  The teams and coaches support one another at events on a regular basis.  The positive environment from all 31 teams on campus plays a big role in the collective success of the athletic department.

There are still events to be contested during the next month, but the 2012-13 season is in a league of its own for outstanding performance in the Big Ten.
