PLAYING FOR PATERNO: AN ERA OF CHANGE
Wednesday, February 17 - Noon
Cost: Free and open to the public

Joe Paterno once said that in order to judge who a college team's best players are, you need to check back in 20 years to see what kind of men they became. Charlie Pittman was a member of coach Paterno's first undefeated teams in 1968 and 1969, and went on to become highly successful media executive. Join us on Wednesday, February 17, 2019, at 12:00 PM, as Pittman recounts his experiences playing for Paterno.

FIGHT: ADAM TALIAFERRO'S STORY
Wednesday, February 24 - 6:00 p.m.
Cost: Free and open to the public

On September 23, 2000, while playing in only the fifth game of his collegiate career, Adam Taliaferro was paralyzed while making a tackle. After spinal-fusion surgery, Taliaferro was only given a 3% chance of ever walking again. Less than a year after his injury, he led the football team with a skip and a jog onto Beaver Stadium's field for the first game of the 2001 season.

Penn State alum Jerry Moyer and Burke Cherrie formed a unique partnership and decided to make a film titled FIGHT. The film chronicles the stories of 11 everyday people, including Taliaferro, and how they overcame obstacles in their life's journey. Behind the bright lights of nearly every success story are numerous setbacks, challenges, sweat, tears, doubt, and fear. To be successful and to live a truly fulfilled life, one must face and overcome these challenges: fight.

Join us on Wednesday February 24 at 5:15 PM as Moyer and Taliaferro share stories of overcoming outstanding obstacles and fighting for success.

Capaletti Trophy

The All-Sports Museum honors the student-athletes and coaches through history who have helped make Penn State's intercollegiate athletic program one of the best in the nation. Inside the Museum, the inspirational story of men's and women's sports at Penn State is shown in dramatic visuals that cover the walls from floor to ceiling. You'll see larger-than-life photographs as well as the equipment athletes use and the uniforms they wear. Highlights include:

  • Heisman Trophy won by John Cappelletti in 1973
  • Lombardi and Maxwell Awards
  • Broderick Award & Wade Trophy-two of women's collegiate athletics' highest honors
  • Olympic Memorabilia from many of Penn State's 125+ Olympians
  • Gold Medal won at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics by Horace Ashenfelter

Visitors to the Museum can hear the ping of the ball, the roar of dedicated fans, the fight songs, the Blue Band performing at halftime, and many of Penn State's cheers. Throughout the Museum you will find interactive exhibits that invite visitors to experience what it feels like to punch a leather-covered heavy bag, take on another wrestler, grip a discus, and hold real sports equipment like a turn-of-century football.

The Museum also includes the Clemens Family Theater which shows game highlights and video presentations daily

On the Air
New to the Museum

To honor many of the individuals that have covered the Nittany Lions through the years, the Penn State All-Sports Museum has opened a new exhibit, Penn State On the Air. This exhibit provides an overview of Penn State Sports in the media from the early days of stringer reporting in the early 1900s to the advent of the Big Ten Network. Centering on those individuals who have lent their pen, voice, and talent to bringing Penn State Athletics to life throughout the years, the exhibit allows visitors to experience Penn State's greatest sports moments through original radio and television accounts.

The exhibit features an interactive touchscreen that allows visitors to identify and learn about individuals who have covered Penn State in print or on radio and television. Many current and former broadcasters/writers are featured including Steve Jones, the play-by-play voice of the Nittany Lion basketball and football teams, Fran Fisher, George Paterno, Jim Tarman, Jack Ham, Mickey Bergstein, Bob Prince, Nelson Goldberg, Ridge Riley, Joe Mason, and Jerry Fisher, the longtime play-by-play voice of the Lady Lion basketball team.
